I just finished the main story in Pokemon Sword the other day (working on the extra quest line after the main story now), and I'm curious what your opinions are if you've played the games?

Considering the amount of hate the games received prior to launch about not having a national pokedex, I didn't know what to expect with the overall reception.

Personally, not having the national dex didn't bother me (I typically don't go out of my way to finish the dex), and I thought the game was great.  The wild area is my favorite -- being able to team up with other trainers for raid's is a really cool feature.

The story itself is very "typical" Pokemon fair -- so you either like it don't like it.  I'm in the "like it" camp, so I found the spin on the standard story to be enjoyable, and familiar (in a good way).

Opinions?  I know you have the game, @J-Link and @Carbon .

I finished most of the game but not completed yet - just got past Olenna.

However - I'm still not sure how I feel about the incomplete pokedex. I would like to see it updated in the future, because we now have Pokemon Home which is a modern solution to the PokeBank which I had several of my Pokemon transferred from older games into X/Y and then I went ahead and moved everybody straight into Pokemon Home. I think it's more of an aesthetically pleasing choice, having everyone together in both a current/modernized system, and more easily accessible because the PokeBank is restricted to the 3DS and prior (and not a lot of people use 3Ds anymore now that the Switch is the go-to for Nintendo gaming)

I was pleasantly surprised by how great the game was for me, I loved all the nuanced changes like instead of having to be surprised with an annoying Pokemon at every other step in tall grass, you can now, realistically, freaking see them stick out of the grass and avoid them if necessary. Even so - they balanced that so you couldn't just cheese it by running straight around them (you may already know that running would just engage Pokemon to appear directly in front of your character)

This game was a great change in pacing and mechanics. I do sorely miss some of the... RPG elements from the prior games, but not every game needs to follow the same itineration every installment.

What I'd personally like to see is Gamefreak update the game with a complete Pokedex to allow in-game Pokemon from every gen, instead of immediately focusing on the next generation of new Pokemon (because we are already overwhelmed with new Pokemon at this point).

We have the Switch, which is a modern console. There's no reason they couldn't expand the Pokemon database and model libraries by completing the "Pokedex", which in turn, they could literally just "copy / paste" over to whatever next installment they develop for the Switch. So it would make more sense to do DLC / story updates to Pokemon Sword/Shield, and when it feels saturated with a complete Dex, and there's been enough expansions to the game itself, that's when they could move on.

And Gamefreak can also save face on the whole fiasco with Pokemon Home being impossible to transfer backwards by allowing all future installments to have all+future Pokemon capable of transferring. That would probably satisfy everyone.
